Semi-Solid-State Batteries are Coming to MG's European EVs

MG Motor, owned by Chinese SAIC Motor, is the first manufacturer globally to achieve mass production of semi-solid-state batteries.
It plans to bring these to the European market inside the MG4 EV Urban range by the end of 2026.
Semi-solid-state batteries are a step towards all-solid-state batteries. Other carmakers, such as Toyota, have plans to make all-solid-state EV batteries, which offer longer range, higher output and longer life compared to traditional liquid electrolyte batteries.
The MG SolidCore Battery
MG has named its semi-solid-state battery the MG SolidCore Battery. The company says that solid-state electrolytes within each cell form a protective barrier, extending battery lifespan. The company says its battery will ensures full compliance with future regulatory standards.
This architecture, it says, performs exceptionally in low-temperature conditions, enabling immediate vehicle start-up without preheating and providing improved acceleration compared with conventional EVs under similar conditions.
Vice Present of MG UK and Europe, Kimi Li says: “MG's new SolidCore Battery and Hybrid+ technology provide tangible benefits for our customers and position our vehicles at the forefront of their class."
MG also unveiled new technology for the hybrid car market including advanced software, a larger core battery and a 3-speed hybrid transmission under the banner of Hybrid+ technology.
Kimi continued: “These advancements reinforce MG's commitment to making cutting-edge technology and electric mobility more intuitive, accessible and widely available. Our strategy of developing MG vehicles in Europe, for Europe further enhances the desirability, versatility and value that our cars deliver to customers across the European market.”
MG's SolidCore Battery technology is set to be introduced in its EVs in Europe at the end of 2026.
MG in Europe
SAIC owned MG has expanded its presence across Europe in recent years, with cumulative sales now exceeding one million vehicles. The brand is now active in 34 European countries.
Data from The European Commission shows that the European passenger plug-in vehicle market recorded approximately 298,000 registrations in January 2026, a 22% year-on-year increase compared with January 2025.
Of these registrations, battery electric vehicles (BEVs) accounted for around 195,000 units.
MG has opened the MG Engineering Centre in Germany as part of its “in Europe, for Europe” strategy to support production specifically for the European market.
All-solid-state batteries
According to the Faraday Institute, all solid-state batteries have the potential to revolutionise EVs. It argues that successful implementation of a lithium metal negative electrode, together with the replacement of flammable organic liquid electrolytes by solid electrolytes, would enable longer driving range, faster charging and enhanced safety.
Toyota and CATL are already developing all-solid-state batteries. According to the South China Morning Post, SAIC Motor is accelerating development of all-solid-state batteries, with a production line under construction in Shanghai. The company's MG4 became the world's first mass-produced model including a semi-solid-state battery, and was priced at 99,800 yuan (US$14.5k) in China.
Semi-solid-state batteries are a step towards radical all-solid-state battery technology.
