BMW highway assistant (Level 2): enhanced comfort for long journeys

The BMW Highway Assistant, a Level 2 driving assistance system, is designed to provide greater comfort on long-distance journeys. It operates up to 130 km/h (81 mph) on motorways with structurally separated carriageways.

Drivers can take their hands off the steering wheel for extended periods while remaining attentive and ready to take control if necessary.

Key features include:

  • Active Lane Change Assistant: The vehicle can change lanes autonomously, adjusting speed as needed.
  • Hands-Free Driving: This enables drivers to reposition their hands comfortably while the system handles steering.

BMW personal pilot (Level 3): facilitating in-car activities in traffic jams

The BMW Personal Pilot L3

The BMW Personal Pilot L3 system introduces highly automated Level 3 driving, allowing drivers to take their hands off the wheel and temporarily shift their attention away from the road at speeds up to 60 km/h (37 mph).

The feature is particularly useful in traffic jams on motorways, where the system can fully manage driving tasks, permitting drivers to engage in other activities such as:

  • Making phone calls
  • Reading or writing messages
  • Working or streaming videos

When prompted, drivers must be ready to reassume control within a few seconds, especially in complex situations like roadworks.

Combining these advanced driving assistance systems in the new BMW 7 Series offers comprehensive functionalities for a more comfortable and relaxing driving experience on short and long journeys.

“We are setting new standards in the automotive industry by combining both technologies in the new BMW 7 Series,” says Dr Mihiar Ayoubi, Senior Vice President of Driving Experience BMW Group. “In the process, we are underlining our commitment to offering our customers a safe, comfortable, and innovative driving experience.”
