Hyundai enhances European R&D with new facilities, advancing EV technology, high-performance systems and sustainability

Hyundai Motor Group is reinforcing its position as a leader in automotive innovation with a significant expansion of its European research and development (R&D) facilities.

The initiative reflects its commitment to advancing sustainable mobility and enhancing its global impact. Notable developments include completing a test centre extension at Nürburgring and the forthcoming Hyundai Motor Europe Technical Centre’s Square Campus opening in March 2025.

Expanded Nürburgring test centre

Building on its decade-long history at Nürburgring, which pioneered durability testing in 2011, Hyundai enhanced its capabilities with the latest expansion.

The Nürburgring test centre now features an additional 834 square meters of advanced facilities, including workshops, specialised laboratories and high-voltage EV charging infrastructure.

Tyrone Johnson, Managing Director of Hyundai Motor Europe Technical Center

Tyrone Johnson, Managing Director of Hyundai Motor Europe Technical Center, highlighted the significance of this development, stating: “This expansion represents a bold step toward securing the infrastructure needed for the future of mobility. It reflects our confidence in the growth of the EV sector and our commitment to driving sustainable innovation.

“Our expanded facilities at the Nürburgring will allow us to integrate our N-performance with our EV strategy even more seamlessly. This serves as a testament to our road to electrification in Europe.”

Square Campus: Advancing European R&D

Hyundai’s upcoming Square Campus, located in the Rhine-Main region, is a state-of-the-art facility that spans over 25,000 square meters. It will house the most considerable four-wheel noise, vibration and harshness (NVH) dynamometer (dyno), advanced chassis and powertrain dynos.

By design, the cutting-edge tools simulate and evaluate vehicle performance under various conditions, eliminating the need for extensive on-road testing.

The Square Campus will focus on developing technologies for EVs, advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS), infotainment and electrification.

Tyrone adds: “This expansion of our facilities impressively demonstrates the progressive mindset that drives us at Hyundai Motor Group. We are constantly moving ahead, motivated by the challenge of pushing limits to achieve greater success.

“Germany remains at the heart of automotive excellence. Our investment in this powerful ecosystem reflects our confidence in the Rhine-Main region’s engineering expertise and innovative strength. It proves our commitment to the passionate engineers and partners who make it all happen.”

Sustainability at the core

The Square Campus exemplifies its dedication to sustainability. The facility incorporates eco-friendly materials, photovoltaic panels and heat pump systems. Additionally, it features modern hybrid workspaces, a rooftop garden and smart working systems to promote collaboration and creativity.

The developments align with its commitment to achieving zero-tailpipe emissions by 2035 in Europe and advancing sustainable mobility solutions. The upgraded infrastructure will accelerate EV technology and high-performance systems innovation while maintaining environmental responsibility.

Opportunities for growth and collaboration

The expansion of Hyundai’s Technical Center opens doors for talented professionals in the Rhine-Main region. Engineers specialising in electric powertrain development, ADAS systems and vehicle dynamics can explore career opportunities through the Technical Center’s job portal.

“With our expanded facilities, we provide engineers with a hub for creative collaboration,” Tyrone adds.

“They have the resources and advanced technologies they need to push boundaries and shape a more dynamic, connected future for the European automotive landscape.”

By expanding its capabilities and fostering talent, Hyundai continues to shape its future in the automotive industry, focusing on sustainability and performance.
