Innovative 4th generation heat pump system

The fourth-generation heat pump system by Hanon Systems is the first to use a parallel heat source recovery method.

The groundbreaking technology recovers waste heat from the motor, battery and external air, using it for heating, cooling and battery temperature management. By improving energy efficiency, the system significantly enhances the driving range of EVs.

Advanced features and integrated design

The modular heat pump system incorporates patented and patent-pending technologies, showcasing the company's leadership in thermal management innovation.

It integrates the Refrigerant Control Module (RCM) and the Coolant Control Module (CCM) into a single control unit, allowing for comprehensive management of the entire thermal system.

Subu Nagasubramony, co-CEO of Hanon Systems, stated: "By continually refining our heat pump system design to improve efficiency and reduce power consumption requirements, Hanon Systems has contributed to extending EV driving range.

“As the world's second-largest thermal management company, we will continue to strive for lightweight and high-efficiency components through continuous innovation."

Evolution of heat pump systems

Hanon Systems has a history of pioneering heat pump systems with waste heat recovery. In 2015, they introduced the first mass-produced heat pump system. The second generation, launched in 2018, added battery thermal management functions, becoming the first integrated system to enhance EV driving range.

In 2021, the third generation was applied to a client's EV-dedicated platform and was the first to incorporate an 800V electric compressor, significantly reducing EV charging times.

The 4th generation system was first implemented in the Kia EV3 in South Korea, with plans to expand production to the US and Europe.

Yoon Ho Wang, Vice President of the AP Innovation Center at Hanon Systems Research Institute, remarked: "Through close collaboration with our client, we were able to develop the world's first new technology proactively and we are pleased to contribute to improving the driving experience of our customers' EV users."

Introduction of thin HVAC technology

In addition to the heat pump system, Hanon Systems has introduced Thin HVAC technology, a world-first innovation.

The reduced HVAC system decreases the overall size by approximately 30%, providing more legroom for passengers by minimising exposure under the cockpit.

The advancement ensures a comfortable and pleasant driving experience, further enhancing the appeal of EVs.

With these innovations, Hanon Systems continues to lead the way in advancing thermal management solutions, contributing to the evolution and efficiency of electric mobility worldwide.
