Global ports are investing in automation, with Asia-Pacific leading. Autonomous cranes and private networks are transforming operations worldwide

Advanced technologies drive port automation, with Asia-Pacific leading the charge, as regional differences shape adoption trends and innovations in global ports.

Autonomous cranes transforming ports

The global port industry is undergoing a transformative phase, driven by investments in automation and advanced technology.

According to ABI Research, revenues from autonomous cranes in ports are projected to exceed US$6 billion globally by 2030, with the Asia-Pacific (APAC) region expected to command more than half of the market share.

Ryan Wiggin, Senior Analyst at ABI Research

Ryan Wiggin, Senior Analyst at ABI Research, explains the varying levels of adoption:

"The adoption of advanced technologies in port operations continues to grow in all regions but varies based on infrastructure maturity and union resistance.

Ports in Asia-Pacific lead considerably, with high levels of automation and private 5G networks. Europe is following suit, but North America remains constrained by worker resistance and a limited number of port automation providers."

Asia-Pacific dominates the market

Shanghai Zhenhua Heavy Industries Co., Ltd. (ZPMC) has solidified its position as the market leader, holding over 70% of the port crane market.

The dominance is largely attributed to the early adoption of automation in APAC.

However, European automation providers like Konecranes and Liebherr are gaining traction, reporting double-digit growth in their autonomous crane businesses.

With growing investments in Europe, North America and the Middle East, their market share is expected to expand as ports in these regions adopt more automation solutions.

Private wireless networks: A foundation for success

A critical enabler of autonomous crane technology is the deployment of private wireless networks. Global revenues for private networks in ports are expected to grow at a 46% CAGR by 2030, reaching over US$5 billion by 2031. Leading providers such as BT, Ericsson, Nokia and Verizon are spearheading these advancements.

The introduction of "as-a-Service" solutions is further simplifying the adoption of private networks. For example, Boldyn Networks recently launched their Private 5GaaS (5G as a Service) solution, making advanced connectivity more accessible for ports aiming to modernise.

Regional trends in port automation

While APAC leads in adopting private 5G networks and high automation levels, regional differences shape the focus of port advancements:

Europe and North America: Concentrate on the energy transition with investments in clean fuel infrastructure, electric equipment and energy management systems.

Middle East and Africa: Explore blockchain payment gateways and advanced Terminal Operating Systems (TOS) to enhance capacity and operational efficiency.

Ryan elaborates: "The variance in regional digital maturity and scale of port operations is leading to a variety of advanced solutions being implemented. Investment will grow ubiquitously, but the technologies deployed will continue to vary by region."

The future of port automation

As the autonomous crane market matures, technological advancements and regional adoption trends will continue to shape the industry. From private wireless networks to energy-efficient operations, ports worldwide are prioritising innovation to optimise capacity and reduce costs.

With APAC as the front-runner, other regions like Europe and North America are poised to catch up, leveraging cutting-edge technologies and strategic investments to transform their port operations. The global push towards automation signals a future where ports operate more efficiently, sustainably and profitably.

Ryan concludes, "The technologies being deployed may differ, but the investment in automation and advanced solutions will remain a global priority."
