Nissan says the newly-launched Rogue plug-in hybrid offers zero-emission everyday driving and the ‘long-range benefits’ of a gasoline engine

Nissan is renewing its lineup with the launch of the Rogue, the brand’s first plug-in hybrid to reach the US, aiming to “revitalise” its product portfolio.

This SUV is built with “modern families” in mind and offers an estimated 38 miles of pure electric range for daily tasks, while its hybrid system gives a total EPA-estimated range up to 420 miles.

"The Rogue plug-in hybrid is an important step in Nissan's electrification roadmap," says Ponz Pandikuthira, SVP and Chief Product Officer, Nissan Americas.

“It delivers the convenience of all-electric, zero-emission driving for everyday commutes while maintaining the long-range driving benefits of a gasoline engine.”

The Rogue will be available in SL and Platinum grades, with US dealership arrivals planned for early 2026.

Powertrain and range

The Rogue plug-in hybrid blends two electric motors, a 20-kWh lithium-ion battery, and a 2.4-litre gasoline engine to maximise both efficiency and performance.

“This dual capability reflects Nissan's commitment to meeting customers' needs to enjoy the upside of having both an EV and a traditional SUV in a single vehicle, which will prepare our customers for a more fully electrified future," Ponz says.

"Introducing our first plug-in hybrid in the US reinforces our Re:Nissan business strategy to revitalise the product portfolio and expand market coverage."

This combo yields 248 horsepower and 332 lb-ft of torque, resulting in swifter acceleration than the standard Rogue. Drivers can pick between EV, Save, or Charge modes to manage battery and engine usage as needed. Seven drive modes - Normal, Power, Eco, Tarmac, Gravel, Snow, and Mud - cover any condition.

Rogue is rated at an EPA estimate of 64 MPGe and 26 mpg combined when using gas. Charging the battery takes 7.5 hours using a Level 2 home charger.

Re:Nissan Strategy

The Re:Nissan plan is Nissan’s strategic turnaround, focused on restoring profitability and preparing for long-term resilience.

Targets include improving automotive operating profit and free cash flow by FY2026, with aggressive cost-cutting to save 500 billion yen (US$3.2bn) by then. Half that comes from variable costs - engineering efficiency, procurement reforms, and supplier consolidation; the other half from fixed-cost reductions, such as plant closures and operational streamlining.

Nissan also plans to cut its global workforce by roughly 20,000 jobs (about 15% of the company) and reduce its production plants from 17 to 10 by 2027.

Simplifying and scaling the lineup

Nissan intends to simplify its vehicle lineup, reducing platforms from 13 to seven by 2035 and lowering parts complexity by 70%, as well as shortening development lead times to about 30–37 months.

The company is shelving a planned LFP battery plant and scaling down non-priority projects to redirect resources toward key initiatives.

Strategic partnerships with Renault, Mitsubishi, and Honda are being reinforced, focusing on EV development and smarter vehicle technologies.

On the market front, Nissan will prioritise regions like the US, China, and the Middle East, sharpening focus on SUVs and EVs.
