The data comes as some consumers express greater interest in buying EVs, in part driven by rising oil prices.

Tesla saw sales escalate from 3,157 in March 2025, to 9,569 in 2026, up 203.1%, according to data from The French Automotive Platform (La Plateforme Automobile).

Tesla sales also rose by 89% to 1,806 cars in Belgium, 72% to 1,819 in the Netherlands, 32% to 2,920 in Italy, 25% to 2,477 in Spain and 1.7% to 674 in Switzerland.

Tesla’s European sales

Tesla lost almost half its European market share in 2025. According to data from the RAC, the company's European sales were massively impacted in 2025, down from 326,000 units in 2024 to just over 235,000 in 2025.

The new data sees a shift for Elon Musk’s Tesla in Europe, which was significantly losing ground in Europe due to a variety of factors, including Chinese competitors gaining market share and a reaction of the European public to Elon Musk’s political views.

YouGov’s Fame and Popularity Tracker says 62% of respondents in the UK as disliking Elon Musk March 2026, which is down from a high of 70% in July 2025, suggesting public sentiment may be softening.

EV sales are up in France

The data has not just affected Tesla.

According to data from PFA, new car registrations in France from January to March 2026 for EVs in were up from 18.2% in 2025 to 27.9% in 2026.

This news comes as multiple sources have reported a spike on online search traffic for EV related search terms and a renewed interest in EVs, which has been caused by rising fuel prices for ICE vehicles.

This has been triggered by the US and Israel's war with Iran, which has shut down the Strait of Hormuz.

Model S and X discontinued

The Tesla Model S and Model X are being discontinued in 2026. These vehicles have been in production for nearly a decade.

Elon Musk wrote in a post on X: “Custom orders of the Tesla Model S & X have come to an end. All that’s left are some in inventory.

“We will have an official ceremony to mark the ending of an era. I love those cars.”

Tesla has seen declining quarterly finances and shrinking annual revenue of US$94.8bn. CEO Elon Musk is steering the company towards AI and humanoid robotics which may change Tesla from an EV business to a broader technology company.

The increase in European sales may provide a much needed boost to the brand's EVs, such as the new Model Y Performance announced in 2025.
