Nissan is teaming up with self-driving and Nvidia-backed startup Wayve on new assisted driving tech, with Wayve’s solutions powered by cameras and AI

Wayve is steering the future of autonomous mobility through innovative solutions that redefine the electric vehicle landscape.

This Nvidia-backed startup, recognized for its development of embodied intelligence for autonomous vehicles, is collaborating with industry leaders to transform EVs and set new benchmarks in mobility technology.

Wayve has notably worked alongside giants like Microsoft to advance AI applications for autonomous vehicles and secured an extraordinary US$1.3bn investment, marking the largest AI funding in Europe.

About Wayve

Wayve's focus is on developing AI-driven autonomous driving solutions, specifically partnering with OEMs and fleet operators, which includes those in the EV sector, rather than producing the vehicles itself.

Its approach contrasts with firms that bind themselves to exclusive manufacturer partnerships; instead, Wayve opts for a flexible partnership model across the automotive field.

A key element of Wayve’s strategy is "embodied AI," a system teaching EVs to interpret and respond to environments in a dynamic, human-like manner, enhancing the cars' adaptability in complex scenarios without heavy reliance on pre-mapped data or excessive sensor use.

“At Wayve, our vision is to develop autonomous technology that not only becomes a reality in millions of vehicles but also earns people’s trust by seamlessly integrating into their everyday lives to unlock extraordinary value,” Wayve Co-Founder and CEO Alex Kendall says.

Wayve’s partnership with Nissan, a renowned name in the electric vehicle market, signifies a significant advancement in deploying autonomous tech.

This partnership will embed Wayve’s adaptive AI into Nissan’s ProPILOT driver-assist system by 2027, aiming to elevate safety and adaptability in driver-assistance systems.

Key facts:
  • Founded: 2017
  • Co-Founder & CEO: Alex Kendall
  • Employees: 254
  • HQ: London, UK and San Francisco, USA

Whilst the specific models Wayve's tech will be part of haven't been announced, Nissan offers electric vehicles where it could be integrated.

This collaboration is a fiery introduction to Wayve’s technology in the commercial domain, setting Nissan as a pioneer in integrating this advanced self-driving solution.

“Leveraging Nissan’s technology and Wayve’s AI, we are confident it will allow future Nissan vehicles to closely replicate the judgment and actions of a careful and competent human driver in complex driving scenarios,” Nissan’s Shiro Nagai says.

What sets Wayve apart?

What differentiates Wayve from conventional autonomous systems is its departure from high-dependence on lidar, strict rule-based programming and intensive mapping.

Its AI model relies on real-world driving data combined with simulations, allowing EVs to navigate and adapt to unfamiliar situations more flexibly, akin to human drivers.

This innovative software also integrates seamlessly with existing vehicle sensors, such as cameras and radar, easing adoption by manufacturers like Nissan without necessitating extensive hardware overhauls.

This flexibility reduces development time and costs, benefiting the always-evolving mobility sector.

Kaity Fischer, Wayve's VP of Commercial and Operations at Wayve

“To change the hardware on a vehicle platform is anywhere from a four to six-year lead time and it's very expensive,” Kaity Fischer, Wayve's VP of Commercial and Operations says.

“We're able to work with OEMs and say, ‘Alright, what hardware do you have already submitted for your upcoming production models?’ and then we can work together on the level of autonomy that makes sense for their vehicle.”
