Rivian expands its Commercial Van sales to all US fleets, building on its Amazon partnership and marking a milestone in the EV commercial transport sector

In a significant move that marks a new chapter in the commercial EV sector, Rivian Automotive opened sales for its Rivian Commercial Van to fleets of all sizes across the US.

The development represents a major milestone in Rivian's journey to establish a strong foothold in the commercial EV market, building on its successful partnership with e-commerce giant Amazon.

A new era for commercial EVs

The Rivian Commercial Van, which forms the foundation for Amazon's custom electric delivery van (EDV), has been meticulously engineered from the ground up. With a focus on safety, driver comfort, total cost of ownership and sustainability, Rivian aims to set new standards in the commercial vehicle sector.

Tom Solomon, Senior Director, Business Development, Rivian

Tom Solomon, Senior Director for Business Development at Rivian, emphasises the success of their commercial vans through existing partnerships.

"Amazon currently has more than 20,000 in its fleet and delivered over a billion packages from its Electric Delivery Vans in 2024 alone," he says. "Over the last year, we have been focusing our efforts on testing with some larger fleets and we're really pleased with how those trials have gone."

Safety and efficiency at the forefront

The Rivian Commercial Van is designed to be one of the safest vehicles on the road. It incorporates advanced safety features such as automatic emergency braking, collision warnings and 360-degree visibility.

The systems work in tandem to enhance driver awareness and reduce accident risks, allowing fleet operators to prioritise safety without compromising efficiency.

The van's ergonomic design shows Rivian's commitment to driver comfort. It features an intuitive dashboard, easy access to cargo space and a spacious interior with a walk-in height of up to 6'10".

Combined with Rivian's proprietary software, the design elements enable seamless operation and fleet management, enhancing overall productivity while reducing operational costs.

Amazon-Rivian partnership: A catalyst for innovation

Amazon has played a pivotal role in developing the Rivian Commercial Van, resulting in the production of thousands of electric delivery vans, which have become a common sight on US roads.

Neil Emery, Director of Global Fleet and Product at Amazon

Neil Emery, Director of Global Fleet and Product for Amazon, praises the partnership.

"Together, Amazon and Rivian designed and built a state-of-the-art electric vehicle from the ground up, unlike anything else on the road today," he continues.

The partnership has inspired other retail and delivery giants to reconsider their fleet strategies, driving large-scale adoption of EVs in the commercial sector.

Flexible options for diverse fleet needs

The Rivian Commercial Van is available in two sizes: the 500 and the 700. Each model offers payload capacities of up to 2,663 lbs (1,207 kg) and a Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) of up to 9,500 lbs (4,309 kg).

The flexibility allows the van to cater to various delivery and transport applications.

Tom expresses confidence in the company's direction: "We're excited to be able to open sales to fleets of all sizes in the US, whether they want one van or thousands. Our vehicles are designed to be among the safest on the road and help fleet owners reduce the cost of fleet ownership and their carbon footprint."

With a strong foundation built through its work with Amazon and a clear focus on innovation, Rivian's expansion could play a crucial role in the electrification of commercial transport in the future.
