UK Ministry of Defence

The Ministry of Defence (MOD) is a key ministerial department of the UK Government. The Defence Select Committee scrutinises its policies and spending, with Defence Intelligence reviewed separately by the Intelligence and Security Committee of Parliament.

Established in its current form in 1964, the MOD unified the responsibilities of the Admiralty, War Office, and Air Ministry to streamline operations and reduce inter-service rivalries. Its creation was driven by the need for better coordination, especially during times of conflict. Today, the MOD plays a pivotal role in maintaining the security and operational efficiency of the United Kingdom's defence capabilities.
