Kaluza, Honda launch smart EV charging pilot in Japan
Kaluza partners with Honda, ALTNA and MCRE for a smart EV charging pilot, optimising green, cost-effective charging through app-based technology

Kaluza Japan, a joint venture between energy software platform Kaluza and Mitsubishi Corporation, has announced a cutting-edge smart charging pilot program for Honda EV drivers in Japan. In collaboration with ALTNA and MC Retail Energy (MCRE), the initiative aims to evaluate the performance and feasibility of smart charging with actual Honda EV users.

Smart EV charging transforms how EVs power up, using connectivity and intelligent algorithms to streamline the process. The systems enable EV owners to monitor charging remotely, schedule sessions and optimise energy use through apps or online platforms.

Connecting vehicles, chargers and cloud-based management platforms support dynamic load balancing, renewable energy integration and off-peak electricity rates. This technology boosts convenience, reduces energy costs and promotes efficient grid management.

Transforming EV Charging

Kaluza's software intelligence platform connects directly to a vehicle's onboard systems, eliminating the need for additional charging hardware.

Through a simple app-based experience, the platform optimises charging times for the most cost-effective and environmentally friendly energy. By design, the innovative approach enhances convenience for EV owners while reducing energy costs and supporting decarbonisation.

Jonathan Levy, Managing Director of Japan and the US at Kaluza

Jonathan Levy, Managing Director of Japan and the US at Kaluza, highlighted the significance of the pilot, stating: "Kaluza is working with innovative leaders around the world to transform EVs into intelligent energy assets, making the switch to electric even greener by optimising charging to support a renewables-powered system. Smart charging programs like this pilot with Honda Motor, ALTNA and MCRE are essential for creating customer-centric solutions to drive meaningful decarbonisation progress."

Expanding smart charging in Japan

The pilot follows the recent deployment of Japan's first direct-to-vehicle smart charging service for MCRE customers using Mitsubishi Motors' Outlander plug-in hybrid vehicle. The Honda collaboration represents the next phase of Kaluza Japan's commercial growth.

Kaluza's scalable smart charging solutions optimise charging for over 80% of EVs. With partnerships with global automotive brands like Volvo, Volkswagen, Porsche and Mitsubishi Motors, Kaluza is driving new levels of value and convenience for EV drivers worldwide.
