"Rechargery" EV Station
GM supports IONNA's first Rechargery in Apex, North Carolina, offering fast, reliable EV charging with top amenities, marking the start of US expansion

EV owners in the US state of Northern Carolina have a new, elevated charging experience with the launch of IONNA's first "Rechargery" in Apex. IONNA, a nationwide EV charging network backed by General Motors (GM) and seven other automakers, aims to provide convenient and user-friendly charging solutions across the US.

The opening of the Apex Rechargery marks a significant milestone for the joint venture, which was announced last year. Designed to address the common pain points of EV charging, IONNA locations promise fast and reliable charging and enhanced amenities for an improved customer experience.

A catalyst for EV drivers

The Apex Rechargery features 10 charging bays to support NACS and CCS charging standards, ensuring compatibility with a wide range of EV models. Each bay boasts up to 400 kW of fast-charging capacity, allowing for quicker turnaround times for drivers on the go.

Duncan Aldred, Vice President of Global Commercial Growth Strategies and Operations of GM

Duncan Aldred, Vice President of Global Commercial Growth Strategies and Operations of GM states: "For EV drivers used to nondescript fast chargers in the back of a grocery store parking lot, this IONNA Rechargery is going to provide a dramatically improved experience, responding to clear consumer feedback about what they want.

"The connection between those of us developing EVs and a company building out charging helps ensure an easy, reliable experience."

Beyond its charging capabilities, the Apex location includes a range of amenities designed to enhance the customer experience. Visitors can enjoy snacks, restrooms, complimentary WiFi, and a pet-friendly environment—offering a welcome respite for drivers on longer journeys.

A vision for the US

The Apex Rechargery is the first of many planned locations in IONNA's nationwide rollout. With an ambitious goal of reaching 1,000 live charging bays by the end of the year, it is rapidly expanding its footprint. Additionally, IONNA's plans extend beyond the US, with future expansions into Canada underway.

Wade Sheffer, Vice President of GM Energy, stated: "Part of GM Energy's mission is taking customer needs and applying our expertise to help make EV ownership easier and more accessible.

"The work we're doing with IONNA addresses three things that stand out most: more public charging bays, more reliability, and more amenities. It's great to see the vision come to life here in Apex."

IONNA has already secured 100 sites across the country, each strategically selected to maximise convenience for EV drivers. The company's approach focuses on reliability, ensuring drivers can trust their charging stops to be fully operational whenever needed.

Seamless, technology-driven charging

IONNA is not just about installing chargers but redefining the charging experience. It plans to introduce AI-powered grab-and-go refreshment stations, allowing customers to pick up snacks and leave without waiting in checkout lines.

GM vehicles will soon benefit from seamless plug-and-charge technology, streamlining the charging process for an even more user-friendly experience.

Seth Cutler, CEO at IONNA

Seth Cutler, CEO at IONNA, stated: "This is more than just putting chargers in the ground. IONNA is building an experience, putting drivers' interests at the forefront of every decision.

"Along with our founding OEM partners, we will redefine what reliable charging looks like in North America and give drivers a true choice, from the showroom to the open road."

As IONNA continues to expand, EV drivers can expect more locations offering fast, reliable charging with premium amenities. The launch of the Apex Rechargery sets the stage for a new era in EV infrastructure, with customer experience at its core.
