Technology is the focus for electric vehicle manufacturers

The new companies on the block are poaching expertise from leading automotive and technology businesses to build the electric vehicles of the future

Job To: Chief Operating Officer at Lucid Motors 

“I couldn’t be more excited to join Lucid and be part of such a stellar group” - Marc Winterhoff

Formerly a Senior Partner at Roland Berger, Winterhoff shifted to electrification and took on the position of Chief Operating Officer at Lucid Motors. This was in the same month that Lucid unveiled its latest addition to the EV range, Gravity, which is the company’s luxury SUV model built for sustainability and prestige. 

As the new COO, a role created at the time, Winterhoff will report to CEO and CTO Peter Rawlinson. 

“We are delighted to welcome Marc to Lucid,” said Peter Rawlinson, CEO and CTO, Lucid Group. “His keen insight into consumer and technology trends and operational expertise within the automotive industry in North America, Europe, and China make him the ideal leader to help propel us into the next phase of our growth.”

Kyle Vogt

2. Kyle Vogt 

Job From: CEO of Cruise (owned by General Motors) 

Job To: TBC

The news in November 2023 suggested that Vogt left the company due to his concerns around the safety of driverless cars. While there was no formal shift for him the former CEO will likely be resourceful in his pursuits. 

He previously founded a few companies before Cruise, including the interactive live-streaming service Twitch.

Carlo Materazzo

3. Carlo Materazzo

Job From: Head of Manufacturing Synthesis at Stellantis 

Job To: Vice President Logistics at Rivian Automotive 

“I'm extremely excited about becoming a part of Rivian's team and contributing to the advancement of a more sustainable world,” says Materazzo. He joins the EV business from his position at one of the largest automakers in the world and will deliver world-class manufacturing expertise. 

YoonJung Ahn

4. YoonJung Ahn 

Job From: Design Head at Waymo

Job To: Executive VP, of the Samsung Design Management Centre

In 2012, YoonJung Ahn first worked with Google, leading its autonomous driving arm Waymo. As one of those involved in the production of the first AV prototype Firefly, she now moves on to work in Samsung Electronics Co and lead the Design Management Centre. 

Guan Haitao

5. Guan Haitao 

Job From: Chief Marketing Officer at Huawei 

Job To: Head of Marketing at Zeekr

Haitao’s appointment provides insight into current EV industry trends. Moving from the smartphone maker to the Head of Marketing role at Geely Motors’ Zeekr puts Haitao at the forefront of the changing technology environment, which now focuses on incorporating vehicles into the digital ecosystem. 

Arnhelm Mittelbach

6. Arnhelm Mittelbach 

Job From: VP Production Engines at Mercedes-Benz AG 

Job To: VP Manufacturing at Rivian Automotive

Declared a ‘veteran’ by global media—and rightly so—Mittlebach joins the all-electric business following a long list of positions at Mercedes-Benz AG. Having served 20+ years in the company, his efforts shifted to oversee the manufacturing of one of the most talked about businesses in the EV industry.
