Reviving Icons: Monceau Electrifies Classic Mercedes-Benz

For EV enthusiasts and classic car aficionados alike, marrying timeless design with cutting-edge technology is nothing short of automotive nirvana. Enter Monceau Automobiles, a Belgian startup that's transforming the classic car market by converting iconic Mercedes-Benz models into spirited EVs.
A vision of elegance and sustainability
Monceau Automobiles specialises in converting classic Mercedes-Benz cars into full EVs from the 1960s to the 1980s. Focusing on models such as the W107-series eSL/eSLC and the W111 eSE coupes and convertibles allows them to preserve the elegance of a bygone era while embracing the clean technology of the future.
Roel Pollen, Co-founder and Managing Director of Monceau Automobiles explains their unique approach: "We specialise in converting classic Mercedes into 100% electric cars. Our highly skilled professionals enable us to complete the end-to-end restoration process in-house."
Cutting-edge technology meets vintage charm
The transformation process at Monceau Automobiles is far from simple. It involves meticulously restoring the original vehicle and integrating state-of-the-art electric drivetrain technology.
To achieve this, it leverages advanced design and engineering tools, including CATIA and ENOVIA, on the Dassault Systèmes 3DEXPERIENCE platform.
Best-of-breed components
Monceau Automobiles takes pride in using only new, high-end components in its conversions. It sources from top-tier suppliers in Switzerland, Germany, Belgium, the Netherlands and the US. When off-the-shelf parts don't meet its exacting standards, it designs custom components in-house.
"We model the car using a 3D scan. We integrate all the electronic components that we want for the motorisation, all of that in CATIA, which also allows us to see the adjustments directly, to see the positioning of each part."
Performance meets sustainability
The resulting vehicles are a testament to the harmonious blend of classic aesthetics and modern performance. Roel boasts, "You get a car with the unmistakable look and feel of a classic car but with the new, worry-free and clean technology of a modern electric sports car."
These electric classics can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in less than 7 seconds and boast a range of nearly 300 kilometres. More importantly, they allow owners to enjoy their beloved classics without the guilt of environmental impact or the hassle of high maintenance.
The demand for such vehicles is on the rise, as Tom Van de Cruys, co-founder of Monceau Automobiles and former CEO of green energy supplier Lampiris, explains: "Our customers want to drive in an environmentally conscious way, without emissions that harm the environment. On the other hand, they love the charm and experience of a classic car."
Challenges and triumphs
Converting classic cars to electric powertrains is not without its challenges. Roel acknowledges, "As an entrepreneur, I have never had this many challenges in one company. Because, on one side, you operate in a luxury market, which demands a lot from you from a marketing perspective. Then the development is a big challenge as these cars were never intended to have an electrical drive."
As environmental regulations tighten and low-emission zones become more prevalent in city centres, Monceau Automobiles' creations offer a solution for classic car enthusiasts who wish to continue enjoying their passion without restrictions.
Roel sums up the appeal: "With a Monceau, you can drive into any city centre or nature preserve, without worrying about the restrictions of environmental zones."
Monceau Automobiles stands at the forefront of a new era in classic car ownership. By seamlessly blending the charm of vintage Mercedes-Benz models with the benefits of modern electric technology, they're not just preserving automotive history – they're propelling it into the future.
For those who refuse to choose between classic style and environmental responsibility, Monceau's electric conversions offer the best of both worlds: a timeless driving experience with a clear conscience.
