DB Schenker has teamed up with Trailer Dynamics and CATL on a battery-swapping initiative for electric trailers in Europe

DB Schenker, one of the world’s top logistics providers, is spearheading a new project in partnership with Trailer Dynamics and Contemporary Amperex Technology Ltd (CATL).

The goal? To bring battery-swapping technology (BST) to electric trailers across Europe, marking a key step forward in EV innovation.

This effort is part of DB Schenker’s wider commitment to green energy and sustainable logistics.

The company, founded in 1872, is now investing heavily in renewable energy and low-emission solutions to meet the needs of modern customers.

Its latest project includes transporting nearly 250 wind turbine blades from China to India for Envision Energy, underlining their dedication to supporting the global energy transition.

Boosting efficiency for electric vehicles

DB Schenker’s collaboration with Trailer Dynamics and CATL aims to develop a network of battery-swapping stations for electrified trailers and, eventually, electric trucks. These stations will make it easier and quicker to charge EVs by swapping batteries rather than relying on conventional charging.

This cutting-edge solution will reduce charging times and improve vehicle availability, offering more flexibility for businesses and logistics providers.

Battery-swapping technology has the potential to revolutionise heavy goods transport by increasing the uptime of electric vehicles and expanding their range.

The project targets eTrailer users, who can benefit from faster battery swaps, reduced reliance on traditional infrastructure and improved overall efficiency.

Swapping a battery is expected to take just five minutes, making it a highly attractive option for long-haul journeys.

“This project is a clear commitment of DB Schenker to a low-emission and efficient transport industry in Europe,” says Wolfgang Janda, EVP at DB Schenker Europe.

“Battery swap technology will play a crucial role in overcoming charging infrastructure challenges and supporting the market ramp-up of zero-tailpipe-emission heavy goods transport specifically in Europe.”

Driving electrification forward

As a leader in logistics, DB Schenker brings its extensive network and expertise to the table.

The company will evaluate optimal locations for the battery-swapping stations and design a blueprint for where these hubs could be set up across Europe. Its contribution is vital in ensuring the technology can be rolled out smoothly and efficiently.

Trailer Dynamics, known for its innovative eTrailer systems, will oversee the integration of the swappable batteries into their electric trailers.

This technology reduces CO2 emissions and increases range, making it a game-changer for the future of long-haul electric transport. The company will provide prototype trailers and technical expertise to help develop the battery-swapping stations.

“With this project, Trailer Dynamics emphasises again its first-mover strategy in the field of the eTrailer ecosystem,” says Abdullah Jaber, CEO at Trailer Dynamics.

“Battery swap technology has the potential to maximise the uptime of our vehicles and reduce CO2 emissions throughout Europe.”

Pioneering energy solutions

CATL, a global leader in battery innovation, is another critical partner in this ground-breaking project.

Its expertise in battery design, manufacturing and application is instrumental in making the battery-swapping system a reality. With advanced capabilities in electrochemical technologies, CATL is helping to ensure that the system is efficient, reliable and sustainable.

“We’re excited to combine our technology and experience with the industry knowledge and operational expertise of DB Schenker and Trailer Dynamics to accelerate the transition to emission-free transportation in Europe,” says Akin Li, Executive President of Overseas Business at CATL.

This joint effort between DB Schenker, Trailer Dynamics and CATL is expected to send ripples throughout the European market.

As the project gains momentum, more companies from the logistics, energy and services sectors are likely to join, further accelerating the shift towards electrification in heavy-duty transport.

The battery-swapping initiative represents a bold step towards a greener future, showcasing the power of collaboration and technological innovation.

As this project unfolds, it could help pave the way for widespread adoption of zero-emission transport across Europe.
